Architectural Discourses on Commoning

New Tools investigates the relationship between architectural theory and practice in the context of contemporary architectural discourse.

The second volume, Architectural Discourses on Commoning, examines current community-oriented spatial and urban practices. It foregrounds questions of diversity and inclusion, the political dimensions of land use, and an ethics of care in engaging with the existing built environment. The contributions illustrate how architecture and urban planning can enable participation, foster solidarity, and support new forms of collective living.

Case studies range from Susanne Eliasson’s Hameau de Séléné, presented as a “Garden Metropolis” with shared gardens and carefully designed transitional spaces, to initiatives by Markus Miessen and César Reyes Nájera that explore spaces of assembly as catalysts for democratic processes. Tatjana Schneider considers the political and ecological responsibilities of architectural education, while Jesko Fezer outlines various community-based design advisory models.  Anne-Julchen Bernhardt and Boris Sieverts present their lexicon of commoning practices as tools for collective spatial production.
