Like other architects of his generation, Zhang Ke found in the reclaiming of ancestral heritage the key to channeling China's contemporary aspirations: a balance that – as demonstrated by the four projects featured in Arquitectura Viva – has allowed him to move from the most restrained interventions to commissions offering greater freedom and creative scope, from the backyard to the landscape. The issue's dossier presents the diverse applications of wood explored in three university buildings in the United States: the Anthony Timberlands Center by Grafton Architects for the University of Arkansas; the Bloomberg Student Center by BIG for Johns Hopkins; and the David Rubenstein Treehouse by Studio Gang at Harvard.
