Dialectics of Austerity

In 'Dialectics of Austerity', Thomas Flores and Mathias Palazzi examine the prevailing
discourse on frugality in architecture — a discourse that appears increasingly detached
from the material realities of architectural practice. In a context defined by the
acceleration of capitalism and competition — where international cooperation and
the collective capacity to effect positive change are weakening—frugality emerges
as an ever more distant horizon.

The authors caution against an unreserved celebration of frugality,
which risks blurring the distinction between the scarcity imposed by austerity
policies and the economy of means necessitated by climate change.
