Team 10—also known as Team Ten and Team X—was an international group of young and strident architects that emerged from the Congrès International d’Architecture Moderne (CIAM) and existed from 1953 to 1981. Its most notable members included Jaap Bakema, Georges Candilis, José António Coderch, Giancarlo De Carlo, Pancho Guedes, Alison Smithson, Peter Smithson, Aldo van Eyck, and Shadrach Woods. The group opposed the CIAM’s bureaucratic and rationalist logic and advocated a reconfiguration of architectural discourse that valued anthropological notions and concerns more sensitive to the socio-psychological needs of identity, neighbourhood, belonging, large-scale housing and the structure of a community.

In this book, architectural historian Pedro Baía examones how Team 10 shaped architectural thinking in Portugal. He traces the reception, interpretation, and appropriation of the group’s ideas in the country’s architectural culture. By uncovering their presence in projects, texts, images, and debates, the book reveals the diverse ways in which its thinking contributed to the critical reassessment of the modern movement within the Portuguese context.
